The Course St Enodoc's Church course is a James Braid design that enjoys a justified reputation as one of the West Country's finest links layouts. It may not look it but the par 5 1st is one of the easier holes even if you have to thread your way carefully between the sand dunes. Pars are harder to come by on the long par 4 2nd and 3rd holes. A real flavour of the course can be obtained by watching our course fly overs. The 6th really sticks in the mind - a 378-yarder that kinks left at driving distance then climbs up to the green. A hidden fairway bunker may catch out longer players seeking a view of the green but laying up short and right leaves a blind shot over the cavernous "Himalaya" bunker you simply don't want to be in. Rumour has it that it is the biggest bunker in Europe but it does have a few rivals for the title. Use your head on this one because it's very easy to make a stupid mistake here. The 10th hole is often described as the course's signature hole as it winds its way towards 11th Century St. Enodoc Church where John Betjeman lies buried beside his favourite course. It is Stroke Index 1 for good reason! A good drive needs to be followed by an even better second aimed at the church porch to avoid the lateral hazard which runs the length of the hole which creeps ever closer to the left side of the green. Over the memorable final stretch it is hard to find the right club on the downhill par 3 15th, while the par 5 16th boasts a rollercoaster fairway and potentially distracting sea views all the way down the right. The hole has been lengthened to 560 yards with a two-tier green surrounded by deep bunkers and has now become a stern test particularly into wind and sets the tone for the closing three holes. To finish well you'll need to conjure up your best strikes to make par on the long par 3 17th and fittingly tough 446 yard 18th. As you putt out in full view of the clubhouse, you'll probably have total recall of all the magnificent holes you've just enjoyed - a sign of a truly great course.
John Betjeman Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman had a lifelong love of Cornwall and wrote many poems about the area and with his usual eye for detail those people who like himself came to North Cornwall for their holidays. He had a house close to the 12th hole and he was buried in the St Enodoc churchyard in 1984, he himself would have had a good chuckle as his coffin was carried the length of the 10th hole in driving rain followed by a cortège of the London literary press corps inapproriately dressed for the "Poldark" conditions. Never one of the World's great golfers he was an enthusiastic St Enodoc Member and eventually had the distinction of being made an Honorary Member in 1977 and is renowned for his poem “Seaside Golf” which relates to the 13th hole at St.Enodoc and is printed below by permission of John Murray (Publishers) along side the later parody by fellow Member Sir Robin Butler (now Lord Butler) at the time of the Club's Centenary celebrations in 1990. Seaside Golf How straight it flew, how long it flew,
It clear’d the rutty track
And soaring, disappeared from view
Beyond the bunker’s back –
A glorious, sailing, bounding drive
That made me glad I was alive.
And down the fairway, far along
It glowed a lonely white;
I played an iron sure and strong
And clipp’d it out of sight,
And spite of grassy banks between
I knew I’d find it on the green.
And so I did. It lay content
Two paces from the pin;
A steady putt and then it went
Oh, most securely in.
The very turf rejoiced to see
That quite unprecedented three.
Ah! Seaweed smells from sandy caves
And thyme and mist in whiffs,
In-coming tide, Atlantic waves
Slapping the sunny cliffs,
Lark song and sea sounds in the air
And splendour, splendour everywhere.

Having a lazy Sunday so got out the gates early, was hitting it great but missed a string of short birdie putts but still went -6, -5, -4 to be -15 with a round to go. Started the final round brightly and was -16 on the 4th tee before two OBs led to an 8. Pure stupidity! Rallied to shoot +1 and -14 overall but it should have been nearer to -20.
Managed to play the hardest par 4 in England -2 for the week so laying down the challenge for someone to play the 10th better than that!
Good luck fir your rounds everyone!

Well, all I can say is I made an appearance this week. I finished R1 at -2, 4 strokes behind paddyjk19 , who had a fabulous tournament this week! Then the wheels came off for me. I finished at (+16) for the tournament. Heading to the club house for a few 🍺🍺🍺 then heading to the St. Annes Old Links.

Round 1 and I had my "old" clubs back in the bag. Out of nowhere, artvandelay emerged from the shadows and wanted to pair up live. That was a new experience for me. Unfortunately he had to leave after 8 holes and I will not reveal his score, but boy what a language! I have never heard such trash talk! I had somehow found my game again and was bogey free on -3, despite playing the last 10 holes with tears in my eyes missing my playing buddy.

Round 1 and picked up where I left off with Mike wimigbg and grabbed his ghost (normally don't play that way but seemed rude not to finish the round together). I had to walk off after making a kick in chirp on 8 so it took a few holes to regroup. After Steady Swedey broke the tie on 12 with a kick in of his own, I made a couple of putts on 13 and 14 to go back up. Mike burnt some Brazillians on 15, 16 and 17 before leaving one in the jaws on the last. GG Mike. Secondly I think I need an injury exception for the remainder of the tourney if not the season: And as you can see the stick is in my knee not up my arse. Onward ever so gingerly!

With ya there @sirwade on the capitulation, although not to your extreme. Was -9 at the halfway mark. Quite a few lip outs in Rd1. Missed a heap of greens but chipped really well. Couple of nice short downhill bump and runs from 7/8 yds dropped. +2 and +3 in Rd's 3 and 4. The greens had me buggered and my chipping deserted me for the most part. Rd4 pins were very demanding. Good luck all.

A couple of poor swings in round 2 led to a couple of double bogeys.Played well otherwise in the breezy conditions so a bit disappointed to step back 1 .

Happy to say my problems with the swing is solved. Sollution? Recalibration. However, my putting still needs to be fine-tuned. Missed 4-5 short putts this round - but very solid aside from that.

Played round 2 with andersnm . As he said himself, a lot of missed short-medium putts the first 9, but holed a few longer on the back 9. Could have been 2-4 under par with good approaches and lovely pitching. And I have not made a bogey yet, just a double. That was really a nice thing, giving away a ball to the cows on the 4th with the tee shot. And it hurts to miss the 6 footer birdie putt uphill on the 10th in my quest to play the hole at least -2 like paddyjk19 . But very happy with a 68 and in these winds. Come on, artvandelay !

One saving grace is that the view from the upper deck at the clubhouse looks superb and maybe a few pints of Cornish Rattler Cider will help numb the pain!
