It's official. Starting my first design. Was able to get the correct Lidar data for this course. Re-did the mask as I wanted to make sure I got the cliffs surrounding the course and Lake Merced correct. Right now, doing all the OSM mapping of the greens, fairways and bunkers. Hoping I can get that done so I can move on to cart paths and trees etc. Then next would be to make sure everything is correctly aligned before moving to the designer. Doing this part alone is very tedious but ensures everything will be correct moving forward. Just trying to do it the right way. It is a lot to take on for a first time designer and I haven't even gotten to the true fun stuff yet. Luckily get some talent designers here on USE to ask for help. Here's the mask that I re-did. The first one, the object meter was 22%. This one is at 2.7% Was the reason the object meter was a bit high from how I masked it off and it maybe showing too much of the surrounding area? Are the object and memory percentages what I'm looking for when starting off? Just asking for future reference.

First initial OSM mapping of the greens, fairways and bunkers are done. A few tricky spots on the course to tell if it was rough or fairway as Harding Park likes to mow their fairways in halves. Played here a lot before the renovations. Now TPC Harding is more for once a year play if that. Live in the city outside of the border that isn't considered San Francisco and have to pay a ridiculous amount and not the resident rate. A bit of course knowledge will help with this. Google Earth Pro was a good reference too. Lidar data is from 2010 which is when they had the President's Cup (first time I saw Tiger irl) and the WGC. I watched the hole by hole video of the 2020 PGA Championship. Great thing about the video is it shows a lot of detail in regards to the specific trees on the course which will be helpful. A couple of yards before each green, is that fairway that is mowed in a pattern? Next up on OSM cart paths.... edit: I already noticed that I'll have to use TGCTools to line up everything properly. Screenshot added with trees and wanted to see what water would look like for Lake Merced.

Sounds like your hole by hole video will do the trick but, just in case, thought I'd send this. Also a hole by hole, but with good production values for the viewer and maybe some different angles. It's also just a really cool video. So if it's not helpful for the design, you might just enjoy watching it (Back 9 should be in the links next to it or underneath it.)

Doesn't hurt to have more references to look at. Yeah been enjoying his golf content for awhile now. Top notch.

All the cart paths are done along with all trees mapped on the course in OSM. Going through Google Earth Pro and watching fly-bys of the course to make sure the trees and greens/bunkers/cart paths are in the right spots. On the side, I have been going thru CrazyCanuck's tutorial as when it comes to the designer tools I am still a noob. So that helps get a basic overall feel of what does what. Still it feels like another language though. Harding Park does look good when I ran Chad's Tool to see the OSM updates so that's a good sign.

Well learned that using Bing aerial image to map the entire course in OSM and using parts of Mapbox satellite because you can't see certain parts is a big no no for Lidar courses. Luckily, I only used the view for a few fairways and it wasn't a complete overhaul. Still now I know why you've got to be really meticulous with this side of the process as it'll make it easier down the road. With Paddy's help was able to use up the entire plot and get the surrounding areas of Lake Merced along with the coastline of Ocean Beach which is just around the corner from Harding Park. Even mapped Fleming 9 hole course which is part of the First Tee program within Harding Park. Could be a 9 hole release down the line once this is completed. Now in the designer part of things and really glad that I spent more time with OSM before moving forward. Marked off all the trees on the course and moving onto smoothing the cart paths. It was a lot of fun and gratifying after all that OSM work laying out the tees as there will 4 sets and certain holes have 5 tee boxes for them. Pretty good process for one day. Excited to keep this project going now.

Sounds like you're having a really good learning process here, whilst still heading towards a good end product for this project 👏
9 hole course as well?! Sounds great 👏

Nice work so far Will! certain tasks can get a little monotonous for sure so well done on the perimeter fencing! I have abut 15 days worth of grass planting to come at the end of my current project and still have 10 holes of tree planting to do and lots more fencing! The hardest part of designing is keeping motivation up as 150-200 hours is a long time! I find keeping your posts going is a good start because others will keep you accountable to keep going haha!

So it's definitely achievable to get a similar look to this within the designer if I individually plant the grass like this for certain parts of the course? I really want to get the 18th hole (shown left on picture) and surrounding area of as close to this as I can. As you can see a lot of this from the tee shot. I've gone back and played some of yours and Anders courses to see how you both plant grass/fescue. I've also seen the Shinnecock beta and how all that fescue was planted to see how much I've got to do here. I think it's worth it. But how much is too much?

Harding park has some fantastic holes, doesn't it...
(Really enjoyed getting to know it at the recent PGA championship.)

Probably one of my golf favorites here in California, up there with Half Moon Bay and also Spanish Bay in Monterey down south. Now if I lived on the other side of the city boundaries (less than 10 miles) I'd be in San Francisco and be able to get the resident rate at Harding Park and much more affordable green fees. Such a big difference in the quality of a course it is now when they had the renovations and became a TPC.

I've got a habit of looking up green fees of courses when I watch tournaments. Am I remembering right that Harding park is 75 dollars for locals? And like 200 for non locals? Any LiDAR on those other courses you love?

Any LiDAR on those other courses you love? That's correct. And I would pay 120 for being in state lol. Spanish Bay has Lidar. Was going to do that one but wanted to get accustomed to the designer first. Harding Park felt like a good choice to start out with as the course overall is fairly flat with a lot of planting.
