Round 1 and that was one of the most enjoyable rounds I have played. A wee breeze, a low sun shading the bunker lips and hills, the sea splashing in the distance. Maybe it helped that I drove the ball straight, hit the irons with precision. Sorry I could not hole more putts, believe you me - I had good birdie opportunities on the first 7 holes and made 1, from 2 feet. It could have been a much lower score.

I agree with wimigbg , Lovely conditions in a nice setting. And also I could have scored lower. Never thought I would ever say that after scoring -6 . At the front 9 my approach shots were a bit slow and to the right. But at the final 6 holes I was playing darts and scored -5 at the last 6 holes alone.

Kidding aside, welcome to, temporary, top of the leaderboard! Maybe we will play together in the last round.

Played round 1 in the company of @sirwade who had a very steady round.I on the other hand was very erratic & the conditions were perfect for low scoring π

Round 2 and a very different day. The wind picked up a bit. I did not play quite as good from tee to green as in round 1, but descent enough. But I missed some more greens and in combinations with very tricky pin positions on some holes, this was a lot harder. In the new swing era, I lean more towards chipping than pitching if that is possible. Even my short game will now on be on the safer side, noy go after pins even from 20 yards sometimes. It's getting more and more like real golf to me. Suddenly a 40 feet putt from the middle of the green is much more desirable than a 18 yard pitch. At least to me at the moment. And I like that.

The chipping baffles me in this game. You have more chance of holing a chip out of heavy rough from 7 to 12 yards than a putt on the green from the same distance. That feels nothing like real golf to me. The pitch is the only really skill based shot we have from off the green. HB are tweaking it the wrong way. It is the longer clubs that should have the distance penalty for red fast and it gets less for the more lofted clubs.

Normally you chip with the longest club reasonable, not the LW which is the hardest to chip with.

I think this depends, from a pro point of view they use LW quite a bit on their chips and pitch shots. It is more of a risk shot for amateurs, I use my SW and LW in real life for shorter chips and up to my 8 iron for longer chips. Anders uses his LW for chipping/pitching from all distances I recall him saying. Also you want more loft from a bad lie in the heavy rough. You wouldn't chip with a 7 or 8 iron from a bad lie would you? Pitch seems to be the only shot in the game that simulates the difficulty of playing out of heavy rough when missing a green. I would like tempo punishment for all types of shots from heavy rough. The short game is so inconsistent with it's difficulty per shot type.

No, I meant a regular chip on the fairway/1st cut from about 10 yards. And it depends on the bounce of the club, the surface etc.

I also think splash shots tempo window should really narrow when you have a bad lie. Take off the crazy spin the shot produces and you have a high skill shot to pull off. Hitting down on a pitch shot should produce the most spin out of all the short shot types. Would be nice to pull off those low high spin pitch shots that the pros play.

First Linksland Round in for the week at Castle Stuart. Probably best I've struck the driver in a long time. Still some work to be done but quite nice to be in the short stuff for a change. With roggro and wimigbg playing very well in R1. Tried to keep pace. A few misplayed pitch shots and burning some edges with birdie chances. Not to mention a lip out for eagle on the 12th. On the last, got lucky as a slightly pull 3 wood caught the left of the green. But blasted my lag putt long from 60 feet. Had to settle for par and -2. More strategy involved as I didn't want to end up in certain spots on these tricky greens. Shot tracer is now installed on all the tee shotsπ. Thanks to Charles and Mike for bringing that up in another thread π. Adds a realistic broadcast feel to it at least for me. Plus a little bit of change is good and keeps the game fresh.

Round 2 was one of the most enjoyable rounds of USE I have ever played.Played very nicely & holed a few putts for a change.I canβt really complain about the lone bogey on the card, the 17th is a tough par 3 & the pin was in a really tricky spot, put my tee shot in the wrong part of the green & could only manage a 3 putt.Got the shot back on the 18th to finish in a tie with @sirwade who had two very steady rounds for the week π
