I'm working on my second Lidar course. GHGC ALPHA is published. I'm looking for some tips on a couple of items from fellow USE designers. paddyjk19 , andersnm ,@pakalolo77 and nonusehki . I know everyone is busy but if you get a chance to play the ALPHA let me know what you think. You will be able to see what I mention below. All USE members are welcome to play. I still have a lot of touching up to do as well as cosmetics. Some tee boxes are wavy on the edges. They are lidar generated tee boxes. Should I leave them, replace them or is there a way to smooth them? There is an extra layer of rough/fairway on some fairways/greens. I haven't seen this before. Should I leave them or can I delete them? Lastly, on the greens with retaining walls I couldn't put the walls up to the higher level of the green and keep the water level high up on the retaining wall as IRL. Is there a way to smooth the green that meets the transparent part of the retaining wall? Or should I just put rough, heavy rough or grass spline over it to help hide it. I am on the waiting list to play a Super Bowl best ball tournament this Sunday at this very course. It is about 15-20 miles from my house. Here is the link to the actual course located in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. The course is ranked in the top 100 public courses to play in the USA. www.colonialwilliamsburghotels.com/golf/gold-course/THE GOLD COURSE AT GOLDEN HORSESHOE GOLF CLUB Experience the Jones family’s finest design Recently renovated by “the Open Doctor” Rees Jones, the Gold Course carries the design philosophy of creator Robert Trent Jones Sr. forward for today’s golfer. The Gold Course now features the latest in modern turf grasses, new grass on the fairways, greens, and surrounding roughs, and utilizes “Better Billy Bunker” construction to improve the drainage, look, and playability of bunkers. Tees have been re-leveled, resurfaced, and reimagined, and the expansion of the practice putting green and range gives golfers plenty of opportunity to work on their long and short games. Each of the Gold Course’s four par 3’s presents a visually exciting challenge, and is uniquely memorable in its own right. Even if you’ve played Gold before, you’ll find a few new surprises with the evolution of this timeless classic.

It sounds like it was how the mapping was done in OSM to me. But I'll let Anders and Paddy answer your questions as they have more experience with this than I do. yeltzman might've possibly encountered what you've mentioned with Lidar courses. Be another designer that could help out too. Sounds like it's still early in this project. Once you get this sorted out, will be good to see you getting back in the designer! Edited - Whoops sorry Wade! You've already got an Alpha which means you've been designing. Even better! Will give it a look and play later. Hope you're able to get into that Best Ball tourney on Super Bowl Sunday as well 👍

@sirwade If you are talking about the wavy lines on the right side of 1st tee box. It might be worth it to use the measuring tool to mark off the area. Delete the current tee box and spline a new one in on the level parts of that area. Then see how it looks. Edited - Now That I think about it. Maybe sculpting to smooth it out may be the better option. Again that is just me. Paddy, Anders and others might do it another way. Never planted retaining walls before. So can't answer that one.
Played the Alpha twice. Compared to the hole by hole fly-by video of this course it looks really good. Quite a challenging track with elevation changes from tee box to green on some holes. Really liked the par 3s here and how they are framed from the tee box. Looking forward to seeing the beta and/or final version of Golden Horseshoe 👍

Hope you're able to get into that Best Ball tourney on Super Bowl Sunday as well 👍 Thanks Will, I think you are correct in the extra rough being wrong in OSM. It is actually the fairway it seems. I will have to reposition the splines of the fairway to line up under the green. I tried putting down a spline line of grass on the retaining wall to green terrain. The grass doesn't show up on the retaining wall flap so I will have to redo the retaining walls. The water level will be lower than IRL but I don't see a way around it. I could use a really good carpenter right now. I wonder if hammers1man is available? The tee box on the 1st tee has a wavy slope down to the shelter. The slope is there IRL but I will have to find a way to smooth it without distorting the tee box. Looks like I have a lot more work to do. Trying to stay motivated to finish the course but it's getting tough lol.

Hi Wade, happy to check out the alpha but won’t be for a few days.
I always re-do every tee box with a rectangle or square brush then delete the splines as they don’t transition well into game unless you delete the spline point that is jutting out then close path and sharpen corners.
As for the retaining wall you won’t see the other grass if it’s underneath the green texture as green is number one in the priority list. Would the double water trick fix this?
Again, happy to mess around with this if you send me the file or if you can take photos and post I’m sure Anders or I can look and make recommendations, this is often quicker and easier if I can’t play the alpha quickly

I will take some screenshots and post them. I tried the double water trick but other areas got flooded on around the course. The object meter is really at 54%. It is just doing it's weird thing when I open the course. Right edge of Tee box is wavy. There is a slight slope IRL down to the shelter. The Fairway extended outside the green and pushed the rough down into the sand traps. Seems to be on about 5 holes. Sand traps in the fairways were affected also. Transition between the retaining walls and green look horrible lol. When I had the walls up higher and did the double water trick it flooded other areas of the course. There is plenty of water on the course. Some stunning Par 3s.

I will take a look at it after work tonight. I have done tons of retaining wall, last on Pga Catalunya. Can try to write up once I’ve seen the course.

This one also feels close to finished, to my untrained eye. Good course.
I'd experiment with different colours and textures, or does it have that super manicured look in real life?
Good job mate 👍

Good job mate 👍 Thanks Leon. No it isn't super manicured from the pics I have seen of it. I haven't experimented with any colors or textures yet. I usually try a few different themes along with the colors and textures towards the end.

Yes, that is what I was talking about. I will try to smooth it again. My first couple of tries didn't go well. Yea, I really like the course although it is a little on the short side. The greens are challenging enough though. Reminds me of some of Paddy's and Ander's courses.

His textures always come out looking nice and natural...

But it had a different look to these more natural/parkland/public style courses. (Which I assume yours is when you said it was an American public course...)

I was comparing my courses to Paddy's and Ander's. Usually I try to get it close to the real course but sometimes that's hard to do from pictures. I haven't changed the colors on this one. Yes it is a public course. The colors are what the lidar data made it. But after I changed the theme it did change the color of everything to a little darker. I'm still undecide about the theme. I believe I have it on Rustic at the moment. There was a country side and Boreal theme that looked nice and more natural. After looking at my screenshots the Boreal theme really looks nice. Here are some different looks with different themes. Mine is currently on Rustic. Autumn Boreal Countryside Delta Rustic
