For week 49, we travel to the outstanding Firestone Country Club, South course.
Commissioned in 1929 by Harvey Firestone as a park for employees of his rubber and tyre business, the South Course was the first to be built, after it was designed by Bert Way and opened on August 10 of that same year.
Renowned architect Robert Trent Jones made some changes of his own some half a century later, adding over 50 bunkers, two ponds and lengthening it to 7,189 yards, before further alterations were made by Golforce in 1985.
Since opening, the South Course has hosted countless PGA Tour events as well as 14 of the previous 15 WGC-Bridgestone Invitationals, but it also has Major pedigree too. Akronites welcomed the US PGA Championship in 1960, 66 and 75, with Jay Herbert, Al Geiberger and Jack Nicklaus triumphing respectively.
The iconic water tower on the property also looms large over this golfing mecca, and has already been the subject of countless social media posts from the players this week, as they return once again to a course once referred to by Arnold Palmer as a “Monster”.
Firestone has long been synonymous with golf history. The first golf tournament hosted at Firestone Country Club was The Rubber City Open in 1954. Played on the South Course, the tournament was held yearly until 1959. Notable champions like Tommy Bolt, Arnold Palmer and Tom Nieporte all staked their claim to fame on its challenging bunkers, courses and fairways. The PGA Championship came to Firestone for the first time in 1960, then returned in 1966 and 1975 with champions Jay Hebert, Al Geiberger and Jack Nicklaus.
In the 1975 PGA Championship, Jack Nicklaus pulled out a remarkable par on the Arnold Palmer-nicknamed “Monster” 16th hole, considered to be the hardest hole on Firestone Country Club’s South Course. Tiger Woods also had a memorable moment when his “shot in the dark” on hole no. 18 landed him a victory at the 2000 World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational. These spectacular golf courses are sure to draw you into their historic mystique as you wind your way around the beautifully arranged holes.

Couldn't find a flyover, sorry.
This was possibly my favourite course from last season. It's an absolute cracker. A really tough and fair test.

I thought you meant you'd won, or beat me or something 😂 I love how straight, and apparently straightforward, Firestone is, yet it's really tricky to get close and I love the greens. Every one a challenge, but none over the top. (I hope!)

First two rounds: -2 and -2 I was stone cold with the putter until the back nine on round 2 - where I finaly made some good putts and a nice eagle from a 95% approach shot with a 6 iron in high winds. A big error from a buried lie in a bunker on the front nine in round 2 went back into the bunker - and a double bogey.

Round 3 and 4: -3 and +2 for a -5 total. Last round felt like a complete disaster (though I got to say that some of the pins are a bit borderline - I can't see any reason for it though, so note to self on the import to PGA2k21 - put the pins sensible on all courses).

Rd 1. This was much more of a struggle than it appears. After the two birdies to start, I was battling to save par pretty much the rest of the front 9. I only had 55% GIR...I would’ve definitely been in trouble if it wasn’t moderate greens as I had numerous heavy rough chips. I kept being either in between clubs or behind a tree. Putter was pretty good though. Maybe it’s just me, but I felt like the wind meter was lying quite often lol. I had a couple that looked about 10mph left or right, and did not move the ball at all.

Something I definitely notice on putts, and i think it might be the same on wind; if you go even a small amount past the point of the correct line, it just goes straight! I think it happens on mild breakers (and therefore mild wind too, theoretically.) As always, might be my imagination! ,😂
