I've set up this thread for members tips on improving our real game.

My full swing game is pretty good, I always feel confident with a full swing, but under 70 yards my pitching is severely lacking. I would say my putting is way above average my chipping average and my pitching way below average for an 18 handicapper, any tips on the pitching set up that works for you?

Not so much a technical tip, but the way I’d always practice my pitching and chipping was to hit as I normally would on the practice fairway, then go out there with my lob wedge and pitch all of my balls up to where my driver went. Relies on having a relatively quiet practice fairway, but it gives you interesting lies that you are more likely to get out on the course. I always played it back in the stance to get good contact, if it flies a little lower it shouldn’t matter if you’ve caught it clean - it should check pretty hard on the second bounce.
Confidence is everything, and you only get confident when you’ve practiced something and seen a lot of good results with it.
Got nothing for chipping, I was bad at it. I putted everything I could.

For those 60-70m pitches, put the ball back in the stance a bit, open the stance around 15-20 degrees and practice 1/2 to 2/3 swings with a PW. Keep club face square and obviously make sure you're hitting down on the ball (hands slightly forward of centre on address and contact), let the loft of the club do the work. It will take time to work out distances for swing strength, then try it out using SW and LW which will help with those tricky 30-40m shots where you don't have much green to work with. Open the club face a bit from the rough. Chipping, use a straighter faced club like a 8i or 9i. Again, back in the stance, hands forward and hit down on the ball. Nice firm wrists, almost like a long putting stroke. My 2 cents.....although I haven't played for about 18 months. Now I've retired from cricket I'm hoping my body will mend and allow me to swing a golf club properly. Cheers

Cricket was my main sport. Played it till I got sick and now umpire a bit in Perth premier cricket. Only been doing T20 games but working up to full games for next season hopefully. I’m sure we can find something to talk about while we hack it around. Must say the courses in Perth look fantastic. Hidden gems everywhere.

That'll be my last tilt after 37 years at the same club. Strained a rhomboid? muscle in my back (I think that's what the physio called it) a few weeks back so my bowling days are over and I can't swing a club yet. Luckily I can bat a bit. Defo looking for a hit when my body is at least semi-ok.
