paddyjk19 this is actually questions I wanted to ask you, because I saw that you posted this, in another thread-
I just decided to make a different thread, so as to not clutter that other thread up with different subject matter.
Anyway-
Can you explain in simple terms how hard it would be for someone to make a Lidar course?
Specifically- I would dearly love to make a couple of real courses in my real life area. Ones that I played on 30 yrs ago. I can remember playing there, so I'm familiar with how it is supposed to look. Would love to play them in game. I have no desire at all to make fictitious courses, only real ones that I've played, or ones that would be based on real life plot of land.
I tried making one when I first got the game, and was using Google earth pro, because I wanted the topography to be as exact as possible. Google earth pro kept crashing, and after two holes, I gave up, simply because it was so hard to get the topography right.
When Lidar started, I tried reading about it, the threads over on TCGTours, and it honestly just confused me.
So. with that in mind. since you are familiar with it, can you tell me in simple terms, how hard it would be for someone with interest but no design experience to do a real course, and how it actually works? Like, do you use this tool to get the plot of land, the topography imported into designer, then is it just planting and putting the scenery/objects down? I just wondered!

Hi Josia,
Thanks for reaching out, I’d say as with anything the course designer gets easier with each effort.
As a baseline I watched a lot of tutorials on YouTube or read lots of posts on the TGCT and HB forums to get familiar with the tool set. When Chad’s LiDAR tool came along it made everything so easy to get started.
First things first, where is the course you would like to recreate? We need to see if there is LiDAR for the course, in the UK there is limited data so I’m still waiting to do my favourite courses because of that.
Secondly, if there is LiDAR data available in either LAS or LAZ file format then you need to map the course on Openstreetmap.org as Chad’s Tool (You need to download this) will take the LiDAR and the mapped course to give you an exact replica minus trees and water hazards etc although you can use OSM to get correct positions. You would then need to manually sculpt the ditches and hazards etc. But there’s great tutorials for this.
In short, it’s absolutely doable for anyone as long as there’s data.
Let me see if I can track down the right threads for you and anyone else looking to give this a whirl.
The more people who can do this the better USE will be and I’m happy to help.
If people are happy to go on OSM and accurately map the courses out (needs to be done well and detailed) I’m happy to pair it up to LiDAR for people and send them the course files ready for planting etc. I’d say mapping out the courses is a painstaking job but can easily be done on the sly in the office!
Leave it with me

hammers1manI also had a quick look at the Grove and the LiDAR is good, I haven't been on the designer for a while due to being super busy so I'm still 3 hours away from completing my next RCR, St Enodoc before I look at the next project (probably with be St George's Hill) but I did quickly map out the first hole for the Grove and there's great videos on the website so it would be easy for me to make this course. If yourself or anyone else fancies doing the OSM mapping then I'd be happy to put it together with the LiDAR and send over the course file for you to plant the course or failing that, I'm happy to make it instead. Here's where people can learn about using Chad's tool and how to map on OSM and how to find LiDAR chadrockey.github.io/TGC-Designer-Tools/TUTORIAL.htmlIf anyone has any questions, I'm here to help!

Also, if someone shows me how to broadcast my PC screen, I'm happy to do a complete walkthrough video an publish it here to show how I do it, it took me a few fails to get right so it could save people a lot of trial and error! I'm not very PC literate so not too savvy with broadcasting but I've spent 500 hours messing about with this LiDAR stuff so I can help!

Not a course designer myself, but it would be great to see an RCR of The Grove if yourself or anyone else would be up for the task 👍

Dude, you have GOT to either help Han, or complete yourself, with valderama! It's a great course, his work up till now looked stunning, and I believe there wasn't an insane amount of work left. Plus, it was due to be used by our society

The course I would love to recreate is called Granada Farms golf course, its in Granite Falls, NC, USA
Here is the google map of it www.google.com/maps/place/Granada+Golf+Course,+Granite+Falls,+NC+28630/@35.803315,-81.4031412,968m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x885125872dc4a0fd:0x2e941d99cf3f435a!2sRiver+Bend+Dr,+Granite+Falls,+NC+28630!3b1!8m2!3d35.7838404!4d-81.3886561!3m4!1s0x885125be21d50083:0x2966d6bc62f58058!8m2!3d35.8063242!4d-81.3969862

I searched for lidar data for that course polekatt/josia, and there is only old data from 2003. That is not good, because data that old is ought to be of bad quality, but you can try to download the data and take a look at it in the game - I think I would not map out the whole course in OSM before you have had a look at the data though (mapping takes some time, and if the data is too bad, there is no point of doing it imo).

I’m seriously blown away at how people create courses. I spent about 20 minutes before I gave up and created a course with holes in bunkers. Not sure it’s USE standard, considering I went like +20 with aids on.
