Music has probably been my biggest passion in life. But I have so many! And when you're sharing your life with someone, often things can fall by the wayside. I'm also massively into movies and TV shows, and so is my wife, so we do that together, and when I have my own time, that's often taken up by watching sport, so music sometimes gets neglected! You have described my entertainment life exactly. Maybe we were brothers separated at birth?

hammers1man: It is definitely my cup of tea. I listened quite a bit on fusion when I was younger - like John McLaughlin and his Mahavishnu Orchestra. I think the Inner Mounting Flame is the best album. So if you haven't heard that, I would highly recommend that. If you ask me for my favorite guitar player, I think it has to be Eric Johnson: www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8fXb7Zhki8jeff: Jethro Tull is fantastic. Though "A Passion Play" is not on the top of my list. For me, Aqualung, Songs from the Wood and Thick as a brick is the best, and live performance show how fantastic musicians this band have - though I prefer the old videos from the 70's and early 80's - it's a shame Ian Anderson got problems with his voice. And, when you mention Steven Wilson - Porcupine Tree is also amazing - I first got into them with Stupid Dream - and love In Absentia, Deadwing, not a huge fan of Fear of a Blank Planet, but The Incident is again fantastic. Just had a listen to some John Mclaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra and Eric Johnson, great stuff really like it thanks . Added a few albums to my Amazon Music library.

Aqualung is my favorite album musically, but Passion Play as a complete work of art (music and lyrics) betters it overall. I agree with your assessment of the Porcupine Tree albums, and of Steven's solo work I am most fond of Hand Cannot Erase and To The Bone. The Raven That Refused To Sing is his most difficult album for me to enjoy. Have you heard Procol Harum Jeff? (Could ask that question for the other from UK also). "In Held 'Twas In I" is just a masterpiece both music and lyrics. I confess that I prefer Transatlantic's version of that song from SMPTe. And this is just the best music for me (I just can't rank the great epic songs from Transatlantic - All of the Above. Duel With the Devil, Stranger in Your Soul, The Whirlwind, Into the Blue, Kaleidoscope):

Now I have to go hunt down the Procol Harum and Transatlantic versions of that 19-minute track. Edit: Found PH version but not Transatlantic version here in the States. Five minutes in to the PH version, I am reminded more of Rick Wakeman's "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" than I am of Tull's "Passion Play". Ten minutes in, I feel the same way. I think Tull's magnum opus still wins out. Signed, Tull Fan Boy.

When I’m just driving in the car though, aside from Christmas season I’m usually just listening to local sports radio complaining about my teams lol (Detroit, you can’t blame me) I am along the same path, but since I have taken to listening to podcasts I can now listen to PTI, ATH and the like bashing sports from a national perspective. Just means they don't jump on my Tigers and Lions as often, instead they dump on Jerryworld, OBJ and bigger more notorious knucklheads. Wait, a fellow Tigers and Lions fan?!! No way! Lol. I am pretty diehard, but also critical so I enjoy listening to guys like Mike Valenti rip them to shreds. Deep down though, I still love the teams. Just get frustrated when they do stupid things so I like to hear people say the same thing that I’m feeling, if you know what I mean. I don’t really watch PTI much anymore, but love ATH. Tim Cowlishaw is my favorite, always a good show when he’s on.

I am a big fan of film scores also, love Thomas Newman's score for Shawshank Redemption. The music in the opening scene when we get a birds eye pan over the prison gives me goosebumps. Yeah that’s a good one too. Most of my favorite movies ever usually have great music in it...even if it’s something like the original Halloween lol.

Agnes obel has done two tracks that have absolutely blown me away- run cried the crawling and Riverside. I’ll have to check more out. That song from DARK is all I know of her. I remember trying to find out who sang the male part of that song, as it had a very unique and kinda creepy sound. Then I found out it was actually her using some type of distortion lol, pretty crazy.

hammers1man , I think you also will like Inside the Sound - Ukraine band formed by guitarist and composer Max Velychko. Highly recommend the album "Wizard's eyes".

Discovered a genre I didn't know existed: Symphonic Power Metal. (Good lord, what next???)
Despite my initial misgivings, Nightwish's album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" is really quite good. Nightwish's bass player, Marko Heitala, has a good solo album, too. It's called "Pyre Of The Black Heart".
More melody and less throat-scraping growling than I anticipated, which was a pleasant surprise.

I am in a Nightwish mode at the moment and are listening to "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" today while I am planting on Gamle Fredrikstad GK in the game I also put Nightwish in prog-metal genre, though I agree that at least the two last albums "Imaginaerum" and "Enless Forms.." are very symphonic.

Also Jeff, if you like Nightwish - it might be recommended to try similar bands in the same genre: Within Temptation, Delain, Epica. I listen quite alot to these bands when I'm in the gym.
