Put up this thread to talk about the our real game stories. Played a course after work, thought it would be a easy a at 5800 yards, couldn't be more wrong. Tight fairways, high rough and a lot of very high grass in that rough. the stroke index 1 par 3 of 225 yards uphill is one of the toughest par 3 I have played with 2 bunkers guarding the front of the green. High grass that you just chop your ball out of if you are lucky enough to find it. Wasn't a problem for me as the dry conditions meant that I hit 4 iron drives for most drives, I actually hit my 4 iron 238 yards on one drive. I forgot to put my driver in the bag lol, which was maybe a good thing . What I want to discuss a bit with other golfers here is the reason why I was hitting so far, yes my ball striking was great but I was hitting a carry of 155 to 165 on an 8 iron. The 16th hole is a short par 4 260 yards, I hit my 8 iron on the lay up 190 yards, full height of an 8 iron and I must of had a bit run out but 25 to 30 yards more carry than I normally hit. I haven't hit a ball for 6 months and last year I really worked on my transition from backswing to downswing and it's really paying off as I have always been pretty straight but short. Parred 4 of the last 5 holes with 2 very close birdie putts missed so very positive about my game.

Nice to get those distances Paul I don't know what clubs you are using or what loft your 8 iron is, but that is very decent distances which will get your game to a new level The key for me that has given me more distance on my shots, is to get my body behind the shots. So I need to start the downswing with my shoulders and body and the arms will follow - but all the power and movement comes from the body. This is the transition that you talk about Paul. If I start with my arms, I loose so much power, and I will also not have good ball contact and get poor ball strike. Another thing that I have needed to work on, is my stance. I have a tendency to be a little too far from the ball in my stance. So I am working on standing more erect and closer to the ball. Gives more power and control. My grip is a little bit strong on my drives - but for my irons and wedges, I try to have a neutral grip. I have been working pretty heavy on my chipping, as that is my main weakness - and I have taken the transition I have on my full shots down to my chipping as well. I am not starting with my body, as I don't use my body on the small chip shots, but I start with my shoulders and arms and have my wrist all loose. This has been giving me much better ball contact and better chips - though my distance control has some work to do. But now that I have some consistent ball strike on these shots, that control and feel will be much easier to work on.

Thanks Anders, I played with a low handicapper last year who commented that my tempo was really good. Problem is my iron play is so much better than with my woods/driver. Curious Anders do you swing exactly the same with a long iron and a wood/driver or are your hands more loose between backswing/downswing?. I don't feel I can swing the same with my woods and irons.

I do feel more of a coil and resistance between backswing to downswing. After the initial hinge of the wrist I really feel the body in the swing. Feels new to me also I hit some great chips with my 60 degree lob wedge, not a club I usually hit but thought of your advice when I hit it. Got up and down from a really tough lie, I will practise the shot from different distances.

I have always been better with my irons compared to woods/driver. But yes, I need to swing the same. I have for a period been leaning too much on my right foot on my drives (to hit up on the ball). I have figured that I need to have a more neutral setup and stance also on my drives. My carry with the driver don't really compare with my irons. I have really good carry with my irons, so I have still some to gain on my drives with a driver or 3 wood. I play alot with a buddy that has hcp 3,4, and we are always looking out to improve our game. I hit my irons better/longer than he, but he has more distance on the woods/driver. He also is much better at chipping than me. For my 3 wood, I hit it the same off the tee and off the fairway, pegging it low as a iron.

Interesting I got the answer same from a great ball striker in my society. I hit my irons with a fast transition from the top of the swing to my downswing. I don't feel comfortable with the same swing with any wood so I try to be more loose at the top of the swing. Need to work on it on the driving range.

I go to golf club twice a month for the whole day. But I did not get a particularly perfect golf grip with golf. The ideal golf grip is what allows me to hit a consistent shot that allows me to hit the golf ball consistently and achieve the desired ball flight. They all hold on to the stick in very different ways. But I trained hard and watched all sorts of golf reviews and guides, such as golf-hook.com/blog/how-to-grip-a-golf-club/ and I was able to change your pile grip.

Just a picture from todays round on Atlungstad Golf - 17th hole; I have not played much golf this year due to achillestendisitis I got in winter, so front nine was so-so (mostly problems on pitches and putting which is totaly natural as that is the part that get most rusty), but I really stepped up the game on the back nine to shoot a 83 for the round.
